1. any one of a group of evergreen trees somewhat like a spruce. Firs belong to the pine family. The needles of fir trees are distributed evenly around the branch and have a pleasant smell. Small firs are often used for Christmas trees. Some firs reach a height of 300 feet and are valued for their timber.
2. any one of certain other evergreen trees, such as the Douglas fir.
3. the wood of any of these trees.
